Choosing the right new boat for you

Monohull or catamaran? Big or not quite so big? What extra equipment should you have installed?

When you start the process of choosing the right yacht to purchase from Dream Yacht with the intention of placing it into one of our charter management programs, these are just a few of the questions you’ll be asked to consider. It can be incredibly exciting, and at the same time a bit daunting!

For the most part, placing a yacht in one of our management programs means that you will have access to equivalent charter yachts around the world for a certain number of weeks per year. For access to larger yachts or those of a superior range, you may be asked to pay a supplemental fee. You can therefore take advantage of chartering with a huge choice of over 900 yachts!

Dream Yacht is the largest purchaser of yachts worldwide in addition to being the biggest operator of yachts under charter management as well as the biggest broker of pre-owned yachts. We are seafarers ourselves, love yachts and the yachting lifestyle – and we know a lot about them! We work with nearly all of the largest shipyards in the world. They know us well and take particularly good care of yachts destined for our customers.

Our yacht sales consultants know everything there is to know about boats, their characteristics, their advantages and also their disadvantages.

To get you started with choosing the right new boat for your next adventure, we have described below some of the many types of boats we offer, along with the advantages for each.

Catamarans
These large double-hulled yachts are particularly stable and offer an impressive amount of living space and onboard comfort. Catamarans are very popular with leisure sailors, long-term cruisers and charter guests alike.

We offer three types of catamaran, each one available in several sizes. Here are some of the catamaran options when choosing the right yacht for you.

Catamarans with a flybridge
Catamarans that feature a flybridge are very nearly as comfortable and spacious as a home, with many of them offering 1300 square feet of living space or more. The interior finishes are impressive and this category of yacht is generally very well equipped. They can sleep 8 to 12 passengers and the largest ones also have berths for a skipper and a steward or stewardess. On many catamarans, like the Bali 4.8, a 48-foot catamaran, there is a forward seating area, another aft and the flybridge as your “rooftop terrace”! Plus, lots of outdoor space so you can enjoy many different viewpoints. Bali catamarans have a luxurious and spacious indoor saloon with a pivoting garage door-style door facing aft – so you can open up the whole stern of the boat, transforming it into a kind of large outdoor covered terrace!

Sporty catamarans
Sporty catamarans are the second category of double-hulled boats. Just like the brand new Bénéteau Excess 12 and 14, sporty catamarans are fast yachts able to reach a speed of up to 15 knots under sail. They combine all the advantages of a roomy catamaran – livability, stability and outside space – with those of a monohull. Indeed, these relatively lightweight catamarans are capable of excellent speed and performance. They are pleasure catamarans offering great sensations under sail and the joy of getting around quickly, in the greatest silence.

Power catamarans
The last catamaran category we offer is power catamarans. Powercats have the advantage of two powerful motors, which significantly extend their range. While a cruising yacht typically travels between 8 to15 knots, under sail or under power, the Fountaine-Pajot MY6S can reach as much as 30 knots. Owing to this, navigation time between stopovers is shortened, which translates into a wider choice of moorings and marinas where you can spend the night when you arrive. On board these beautiful boats, you’ll find the same level of comfort as on a sailing catamaran of similar size: they’re as comfortable as home!

Monohull sailing yachts
Monohulls are yachts rigged like sloops and have a large sail, as well as a large fore-sail, generally a jib, mounted on a rewinder to facilitate maneuvers. Monohulls have a more sleek and sporty look than the majority of catamarans, and an altogether different feel at the helm. They heel while under sail, giving you a feeling of being much closer to the sea, almost in contact with it.

We offer a range of monohulls whose length is between 38- and 47-feet. So, what does 15 additional feet mean on a yacht? Not much? On the contrary! A 47-foot yacht weighs about twice as much as a 38-foot yacht. They also have very different navigation programs.

Monohulls are quite popular for sailors in the process of choosing the right new boat for them. Here are some of the options in various size categories:

Smaller monohulls
Smaller monohulls (from 39-40 ft, 3 cabins), which can be fitted with a bow thruster, offer the advantage of reaching places larger sailing yachts can’t – like the more private and secret anchorages.

The Dufour 390 is a perfect example of an ultra-modern 39-foot yacht. With its two steering stations where all the maneuvers take place, this powerful cruiser is able to go from 12 knots to 25 knots in a stern wind! In other words, there’s nothing bland about this boat. Its sleek hull houses three cabins and three bathrooms, at much the same level of comfort as a significantly larger boat!

Large monohulls
Monohulls measuring 40- to 45-ft are equipped for sea voyages. These yachts are built for longer passages, heaving seas and extended liveaboard cruising. These four-cabin yachts can be equipped with air-conditioning or desalination units if they are fitted with a power generator.

A good example of this is the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440. This is a beautiful boat to look at and a true offshore cruiser. Wonderfully stable under sail with sensations at the helm worthy of a regatta, it travels very well under sail and its powerful engine allows you to move along a little more quickly when you feel the need.

Larger monohulls
Very large monohulls like the Dufour 530, of which we operate a few examples, are magnificent sailing yachts. With its impressive 53-foot length and 16.5-foot beam, its cabins offer just what you would expect to find in them – very spacious sleeping berths, a good ceiling height throughout and a living space with sofas bathed in natural light. Outside, the rear terrace transforms into an outdoor kitchen. As it has a significant sail area, there are electric winches and an electric jib winder designed to facilitate sail shortening and make life a bit easier.

Of course, the best way to weigh the advantages of different types of yachts and to choose the right new boat for you is to come and see them for yourself.

We exhibit at most boat shows and will be happy to meet you and show you our boats. If you’re unable to attend one of these shows, please don’t hesitate to contact us to organize a visit to one of our charter bases. We are seafarers, we love boats and we’re always more than happy to share this passion with others!
