The Rise of Sustainable Sailing – Where Eco-Friendly Boating Is Surging Globally

From the marinas of Miami to the fjords of Scandinavia, a new kind of sailor is emerging – one who cares just as much about the health of the ocean as the thrill of the open water.
Interest in electric boats, hybrid yachts and sustainable sailing is rising around the world. Every month thousands are turning to Google to search for greener ways to enjoy life on the water.
To see where this shift is most prominent, Dream Yacht Sales analysed global search data across 62 countries to uncover where sustainable sailing is gaining the most attention.
Key Findings
- The U.S. dominates global interest with 13,230 monthly searches for sustainable sailing and electric boating terms (more than 14 times the UK’s search volume)
- Germany ranks second globally with 900 monthly searches highlighting strong demand for sustainable sailing in one of Europe’s most environmentally conscious nations.
- Thailand emerges as a surprising sustainable hotspot, placing third globally with 800 monthly searches, showing growing environmental awareness in Southeast Asia’s tourism-heavy coastal regions.
- Global searches for sustainable sailing exceed 21,000 per month, showing that eco-conscious boating is shifting from niche interest toward mainstream consideration among travelers and boat buyers.
A Global Awakening on the Water
Across all 62 markets studied, combined monthly search volumes for sustainable and electric boating terms exceed 21,000 searches. That might sound modest, but these are highly intentional searches – people actively seeking out greener ways to sail, invest in, or charter a vessel. They represent a committed, growing audience, not casual curiosity.
What’s especially striking is how widespread this interest has become. From Southeast Asia to West Africa, from the Caribbean to the Middle East, people are beginning to ask the right questions about the environmental footprint of life on the water. The conversation is global, even if the volume is still concentrated in a handful of key markets.
The 10 Countries Leading the Charge for Greener Seas
1. United States – 13,230 monthly searches

The United States comes at the top of the rankings, with over 13,000 monthly searches per month. This is a nation with an enormous recreational boating culture – over 100 million Americans participate in boating each year – and an increasingly eco-conscious consumer base. Electric boats are gaining serious traction across coastal states and the Great Lakes region, and demand for greener alternatives is being driven by a new generation of buyers who want performance without the environmental cost.
2. Germany – 900 monthly searches

Germany’s passion for engineering excellence extends to the water. With 900 monthly searches, it ranks as the clear number two globally, reflecting the country’s deep-rooted culture of environmental responsibility and its appetite for innovative technology.
3. Thailand – 800 monthly searches

Perhaps the most surprising entry in the top five, Thailand’s 800 monthly searches signal a rapidly growing awareness of marine sustainability in Southeast Asia. With its world-famous coastlines, island-hopping culture, and a tourism economy deeply dependent on the health of its waters, Thailand has a powerful incentive to embrace cleaner boating. This is a market worth watching.
4. Canada – 730 monthly searches

Canada’s vast lakes, rivers, and Pacific and Atlantic coastlines make it one of the world’s great boating nations. With 730 monthly searches, Canadians are clearly thinking about how to protect their natural treasures. Strong environmental policy, a well-educated consumer base, and proximity to US trends all contribute to Canada’s high ranking.
5. United Kingdom – 720 monthly searches

The UK’s 720 monthly searches reflect a country with a proud maritime heritage that is actively reimagining what sailing can look like in a net-zero future. Electric narrowboats on the canals, hybrid cruisers on the Solent, and a booming interest in sustainable charter holidays all feed into this figure. The UK government’s broader push toward electrification is clearly influencing the boating world too.
6. France – 650 monthly searches

France is home to some of the world’s most celebrated sailing brands – many of whom are Dream Yacht Sales’ manufacturing partners – and the French public’s interest in eco-friendly boating reflects this. With 650 monthly searches, France sits comfortably in the top tier, driven by a sailing culture that values both craftsmanship and conscience.
7. India – 540 monthly searches
India’s 540 monthly searches may come as a surprise to some, but they make perfect sense in context. A country of 1.4 billion people with a rapidly expanding middle class, growing coastal tourism, and increasing government focus on clean energy is a natural breeding ground for interest in sustainable marine technology. The Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal are vast playgrounds waiting to be explored sustainably.
8. Australia – 450 monthly searches

Australia’s 450 monthly searches reflect a nation acutely aware of its marine environment. The Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays, and thousands of kilometres of pristine coastline are ecosystems that Australians are deeply invested in protecting. It’s no coincidence that Dream Yacht’s Australian base has held ECO Certification from Eco Tourism Australia for over a decade.
9. Sweden – 380 monthly searches

Sweden punches well above its weight with 380 monthly searches, cementing Scandinavia’s reputation as a global leader in environmental consciousness. Swedish sailors are pragmatic about sustainability – electric propulsion is not a novelty here, it’s a logical next step for a country already powered predominantly by renewables.
10. Italy – 350 monthly searches

Italy rounds out the top ten with 350 monthly searches. Italy has one of Europe’s largest recreational boating markets and a coastline that any sailor would want to protect. As Italian boatbuilders and charter companies increasingly embrace hybrid and electric technology, consumer curiosity is clearly keeping pace.
What the Rest of the World Tells Us
Beyond the top ten, the picture is one of broad but emerging interest. Finland (310 searches), the Netherlands (270 searches), Turkey (250 searches), and Poland (160 searches) all show meaningful engagement. Even smaller markets like the UAE (130), Brazil and Spain (110 searches each), and Norway (80 searches) demonstrate that eco-conscious boating is not limited to wealthy, northern European nations.
More telling still is the sheer geographic spread of countries registering at least some search activity – from Croatia and Greece to Madagascar, Angola, and Vietnam. These are early signals, and early signals matter. A decade ago, electric cars were a curiosity. Today they’re mainstream. The trajectory for electric and sustainable sailing looks remarkably similar.
Setting Sail Toward a Greener Future
At Dream Yacht Sales, we believe that protecting the oceans and sailing on them are not competing ambitions, they go hand in hand. Every electric yacht we sell, every sustainable sailing practice we promote at our bases worldwide, and every Go Green incentive we offer to buyers making the switch, is part of a larger mission: to ensure that the waters we sail on today are still there for the sailors of tomorrow.

Methodology
We first identified the following seed keywords relating to sustainable sailing and with relatively high search volume across the globe:
- eco friendly boating
- eco friendly yacht
- electric boat
- environmentally friendly sailing
- green boating
- green sailing
- hybrid yacht
- solar powered boat
- sustainable boating
- sustainable boats
- sustainable sailing
We then translated each keyword into different languages across some of the biggest countries in the world, and found search volumes within each country for each keyword. Finally we totalled up the search volume across all keywords to identify the countries most interested in sustainable sailing.
